Steak and a Show.

  • Any of the red grapes of Bordeaux can play the lead in a one-man show depending on where and how they are grown. Here Charles Bieler, Joel Gott and Roger Scommenga (aka the Three Thieves) present two similar and recommended steak wines from the same vintage, different grapes and hemispheres.
  • Mendoza Malbec 2014 opens up with aromas of black cherry, raspberry, vanilla, and also tones of meat, cedar and fennel seed. It's peppery and tart on the tongue with rustic chalky tannins. 14.1% ABV. Real cork. Local price/750 ml: 13.
  • California Cabernet Sauvignon 2014 starts with similar black cherry and vanilla aromas, with tones of coffee, chocolate and violets. It's full bodied with firm tannins and nice acidity. 13.9% ABV. Real cork. Local price/750 ml: 13.

  • The labels are a collaboration with Hatch Show Print that began in 2005. Now a part of the Country Music Hall of Fame, Hatch has been in Nashville since 1879. There's no mistaking the original look of a Hatch poster, each made by hand on historic manual letterpresses using antique and new woodblocks. It's about history and the kiss of the ink on the paper.
  • In 2001 I had the pleasure of taking several hands-on lessons in printmaking from Master Printer and Curator Jim Sherraden. At the time Hatch was located on lower Broadway and Jim invited me down on Saturdays to learn and help demonstrate the printing process to visitors. What a stroke of luck. As Hatch's revitalization took hold, the place quickly became too busy for those Saturday demonstrations.
